The faces of Futura
Futura, it’s a lovely font, designed by Paul Renner in 1927. Became to be one of the best geometric typefaces ever created. Today there are so many versions and it’s hard to decide which one to use.
Talking with my friend and type designer Pablo Impallari – which I own him my entire knowledge about typography – we did a little research on some of the best-selling versions of Futura.
These are only the Light, Book, Medium and Extrabold sizes, each foundry has many and different thickness. This test is using 30px as the size.
You can buy any of these versions at MyFonts. Prices are for the entire family. Let your taste and wallet decide which one would be the lucky one:
- Futura Std by Adobe - $435
- Futura EF by Elsner+Flake - $672
- Futura T by URW+ - $606.48
- Futura BT by Bitstream - $356.40
- Futura LT by Linotype - $669
- Futura SH by Scangraphic - $416
- Futura BT by Berthold - $785
- Futura ND by Neufville Digital - $814.50
- Futura TS by TypeShop Collection - $347.20
While Futura BT is the best-selling version at MyFonts. We still can’t say which one is the best, although the BT version looks very nice on the display and it’s the cheapest one. The URW+ version probably has the finnest render and kerning for body text.
Also the Futura SH Extrabold is the best one in that size for heading because of it’s spacing.
There are even more versions like Futura ND from Neufville Digital and Futura ST from Type Shop.
Neufville Digital claims to have the best version of Futura since they own the original sources.
If you want to own all of the versions above it will cost you $5101.58, but that’s just a curious fact.
But there is more.
I personally think the best version of Futura is the custom one from USAToday by Bold Monday, see below:
Unfortunately is not available, although if you like it as much as me, you probably will like Century Gothic better.
If you want to learn more, follow @nacho and @pabloimpallari on Twitter, we are going to extend this post with other versions of Futura and if you want us to review other fonts just let us know.
Stay tuned.
